Yours may come in a 200 page document or maybe they’re on the back of an envelope. Without a definitive statement of what is required you will be fighting an uphill battle (at best) trying to develop an acceptable product. Establishing a clearly stated set of product requirements with your customer is an obvious first step. The trick is keeping the focus on the requirements throughout the development lifecycle. That’s the real goal.

A requirements database or engineering tool cannot assure that a product design is good or that the test procedures are adequate. But what it can do is assure everyone on your team (including the client) knows what each component of the design and each test is supposed to be accomplishing. When management, engineering, software development, testing, and the client are performing reviews and making decisions on this basis, good things will happen.
